Wimmer Yamada and Caughey wins 2015 Orchid Award for San Diego Mesa College Math & Science Center
On October 1st, 2015 The San Diego Architectural Foundation presented an orchid award for San Diego Mesa College's Math & Science Center for outstanding landscape archtiecture.
Wimmer Yamada and Caughey provided the initial project programming, Design Development, Schematic Design, Construction Documents, and Construction Administration services for this new 150,000 SF, four story, LEED Gold designed academic building.
We collaborated closely with Math and Physical Science faculty, the campus building committee, campus facilities maintenance, and the District to develop a unique design solution that compliments the new emerging identity of Mesa College and provides much needed outdoor instructional, social, and personal space for students and faculty.
The landscape provides ease of circulation in a very prominent location near the center of campus with connections to existing and future campus facilities. Outdoor courtyards provide flexible accommodations for both informal studying and socializing as well as formal classroom level instruction.
A courtyard at the north entry to the building provides teaching opportunities to support the college's Geology curriculum, with stone outcroppings and sediment walls that mimic natural geologic features of San Diego County.
The landscape surrounding the Math & Science Building features three drought-tolerant gardens with representative plant communities from around the world including an Australian, South African and San Diego.
