After graduating from Stanford University, Harriett Barnhart returned to San Diego where she taught school and married John Wimmer. The well-off couple traveled abroad extensively in the early days of their marriage.

Many years later, at the age of 51, and with the encouragement of her husband and friends, for whom she had already designed many gardens, she opened her own design office. Harriett Wimmer went on to design many San Diego gardens - most notably gardens that contained many shades and textures of green and only white blooming plant material.
Harriett B. Wimmer became a licensed landscape architect in the State of California in 1954. She was inducted into the Fellows class of the American Society of Landscape Architects in 1976
