The new NOAA facility, located at Scripps Institute of Oceanography in La Jolla, California incorporates sustainable design features meeting a LEED “Gold” Certification. Due to the existing steepness of the local geography, the landscape design proved to be an exceptional challenge.

Specifics:

  • Native landscape palette with temporary irrigation
  • On-site storm water management used vegetated bio-swales and collection basins integrated with building architecture
  • Extensive use of vegetated green roofs for passive heat control and blending of roofline into the natural topography
  • Connection of the historic “Scripps Meander” footpath provided link to the main
  • UC San Diego campus
