At the foot of Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach, the Pacific Beach Lifeguard Station greets eager beach-goers. The station serves as city lifeguard headquarters, control station, storage facility, first aid room, comfort station and lifeguard post. Wimmer Yamada and Caughey provided landscape and hardscape design for the facility.

  • Collaborating with artists T.J. Dixon and Jim Nelson the perfect venue emerged for a whimsical sculptural character, Mr. Pelican Brown, to sit at the foot of the station and welcome all visitors.
  • Mounted plaques tell Mr. Brown’s story, and embedded bronze footprints illustrate his “Two Step” dance. Mr. Brown is said to have been a loyal patron of the once popular Crystal Pier Hotel and Ballroom.
  • Other materials within the paving evoke sand, water and beach imagery.
